This Winter? This Winter Was the Best.
Grab your seats, class is back in session.
It’s not often I do a “two-fer” with my reviews, but since I never got around to doing this one last time, and I did my ASM2 review, along with how I felt about this movie? It seemed only fair. As a matter of fact, it seemed like the American thing to do. So lesson number two today? Stars and stripes, Marvel-ites.
I’m just going to get this out of the way: this is the best one Marvel has done yet, hands down. I can’t even really begin to explain how much I enjoyed this movie. I went twice already, and have considered going again. I very much enjoyed the first Captain America and like all sequels, expected that with the origin taken care of, there would be more time to get into the character and more into a new story. This movie did that and then some.
So, as usual, I’ll start with what I didn’t like. The movie ended. That’s what I didn’t like. I could have easily sat through another hour and not even felt it.
Now that that’s out of the way, what did I like? Everything. Seriously, I loved everything about this movie. From the small, quick references to other characters that get thrown in throughout, to the awesome re-imagining of a villain from the first movie, to the expertly written script and the fantastic fight scenes. It all just came together perfectly for Marvel this time around. Chris Evans cemented that he was the right choice for this character as well. I thought he was good in the first Cap movie and in the Avengers. With this one? He killed it. It’s hard to entirely explain why without giving away key points of the film, but trust me. He is what you would imagine a man out of time would really be like. One of the things that worried me the most coming into this movie was the addition of Anthony Mackie as Falcon. In the comics, Falcon isn’t really much of a superhero. C list at best and wears a really goofy suit. The changes and updates they made in this film, however, make him not only an impressive character, but someone you want to see more of. That’s not something I would have ever expected from that character. I would like to get into Robert Redford as well, but it’s difficult to say much without giving away secrets. Let’s just say he plays his part extremely well. The movie stealer, however, may just be Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier. If you know the story, then you know who he is (or if you read spoilers or remember him from the first movie.) He was really, really damn good. Again, can’t say much more to avoid some spoilers. By far, however, the best part of this movie? The script. Phenomenal. So well done. Everything flows perfectly and even with the twists and turns the movie takes, it never loses you, never slows down, and never disappoints. This is one of the rare times you could go into a movie having never seen the first one and still be able to understand everything you are seeing. This film has raised the bar for any and all Marvel movies coming after it, and I’m not quite sure they’ll be able to reach it.
So bottom line (as if you couldn’t tell already): you should be sitting in a theatre watching it right now. It’s that good. If you go, let me know. I’ll certainly be willing to go again.
Until next time…
Class dismissed.
