The Gunman – Movie Review
Hey, Folks. Big Boss here with some more movie reviews for you. Today, let’s talk about The Gunman, starring Sean Penn, Idris Elba, Jasmine Trinca. The movie itself centers around a sniper mercenary, Terrier (played by Sean Penn), that is on assignment in the Congo among a civil war. His assignment, an assassination, goes successfully and forces him into hiding. Years after the event, he returns to the Congo, only to find out that there has been a hit squad sent to kill him. Now he must find out why there is a contract on his name.
When I first saw the trailer for the Gunman, I was expecting something along the same lines of Taken when it debuted. It looked a lot like a black ops specialist having to come out of retirement for one last assignment. I set the bar low, but was excited to see what Sean Penn could do with an action heavy role.
Let me be honest, I fell asleep… That doesn’t really bode too well for a movie review. The story development moved way too slow for me and I could take it. I didn’t miss much either I was still able to keep up with the story even after catching my 40 winks. Although the movie as a whole was weak, I did enjoy the fight scenes. Sean Penn was legit in his combat sequences.
The hits were brutal and the deaths were graphic. Just brilliant. I think that, if nothing else, Sean Penn took this film to show that he has what it takes to make the movie to a legit action film. The category of actors involved in this project was stunning. JavierBardem is always fun to watch on-screen, as well as Idris Elba. Only thing is, Elba didn’t show up until most of the film was done.
So, with the script being laborious, and the talent being grossly underused. The Gunman was a far cry from what I thought it was going to be, considering how low I set my expectations. Even thought I thoroughly enjoyed the action sequences, it wasn’t enough to redeem this film. If you must see it, look for a matinée, but I’d encourage to just wait this one out until it’s available on demand.
