The Doctor is In…American Style
No need to grab your seats, it’s not a full class today.
A challenge has been laid down by the Boss. You see, he posted something on Facebook about “What is Doctor Who had been an American show? Who would have played the Doctor?” They created a list, 1-12 (13 if you count the War Doctor, which I don’t. Feh.) Most of the names weren’t bad, until I got to number 9. Nicholas Cage? Really? Ugh. So I opened my mouth, said I could fix the list, and was challenged to do so. With that, we shall proceed. Now, my picks may not match up exactly man for man with the original actors playing the Doctor. They will probably differ slightly in style, but I’ll try to at least stick to the age method they used. Older men til 9, then much younger til 12 was once again an older man. Now, here are MY Doctors, were they to have been American born actors:
- Tobin Bell
- Robert Duvall
- Vincent D’Onofrio
- James Spader
- Kevin Spacey
- Willem Dafoe
- Philip Seymour Hoffman
- Jeffrey Dean Morgan
- Edward Norton
- Robert Downey Jr
- Joseph Gordon Levitt
- Josh Brolin
I didn’t leave a reasoning for each pick because, honestly? Look at that list. Do I need to? I also did not include a War Doctor as I felt that whole thing was kind of silly. I also have honorable mentions as possibilities for the following: Chazz Palminteri, Johnny Depp, Heath Ledger, Ethan Hawke, and Matt Bomer. Having seen all of the gentlemen listed in several different features, I have no doubt that were Doctor Who to be an American sci-fi staple, all of these men would knock the role out of the park. Each would bring a very different feel, as is supposed to happen, but I honestly believe each one would flow flawlessly into the next.
Until next time…
Class dismissed.
