The Bosses’ Top 5
We’ve reached the mid year mark for the movie year and have had some pretty heavy contenders for this year. With all these great films coming out it begs the question: What’s the cream of the crop? So far we’ve seen a pretty wide spectrum of film coming out this year, so what’s looking to be the one on top? The Bosses’ here have laid out each of their own top 5 list for the year so far. Let’s take a look…
The Big Boss
- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Captain America: Winter Soldier
- Transcendence
- X-men: Days of Future Past
I know, I know. That sure is a lot of superhero films, Boss. Think about it though, it’s definitely the year of the comic book movie. The Box office has been being run by these films. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was simply stunning, in story and visuals and I think will be an Oscar contender for best visual effects. It’s apparent that Andy Serkis is really an industry leader in this form of CGI acting. Guardians of the Galaxy was just pure, unadulterated, cosmic fun. As far as ensemble casts go this one takes the cake. Captain America. What can I say about the Cap? The fact that this story was one that spans from a couple of episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. into Captain America 2. Joss Wheddon and Kevin Fiege came together and really created an absorbing story that still has me wondering where in the world is this story going to go with these characters??? Transcendence was a beautiful film in the fact that it flips the preconceived ideas we have about A.I. and what happens when technology is capable of thinking and adapting on its own.
The Professor
Ok, it’s been a somewhat slow year for movies for the Professor. I haven’t seen as many as I should have, and a lot of the ones left that I want to see aren’t out yet, so I’ll give the best I can from what I have seen. So, my top 5 for the first half? How bout these:
- Captain America: the Winter Soldier
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Expendables 3
- The Lego Movie
- (tie) X-Men: Days of Future Past / Godzilla
So like the Boss said, it’s a lot of comic book movies. Well, that’s what we’ve had a lot of this year, it’s in my wheelhouse, and that’s what I liked. Hands down the best one for me was Winter Soldier. It’s very much a 1 and 1A with regards to Guardians, but Cap, to me, was just better. Guardians is a strong, strong second. It was probably more fun than Winter Soldier, but Cap had the stronger story, stronger villains, and grabbed me better than Guardians did. Now, technically, Expendables 3 isn’t out yet, but the Professor has his ways and has his connections, so I’ve already seen it. It was a lot of fun. Better than the 2nd one for sure and definitely a good “stupid action popcorn movie.” Since I’ve seen it, I’m counting it. For number four, you’ve read that correctly: The Lego Movie. Very fun, very funny, and a total throwback to my childhood love of Legos. For the final spot, I couldn’t decide between X-men or Godzilla. Both had the pluses and both have their minuses compared to each other. It was just too hard for me to choose. If I was forced to choose, I would probably go Godzilla for no other reason than my everlasting love of the character.
Until next time…
Abyss215
What it is… So, uh,.. yea to be honest its been a rough one for me and I have not made my way to the theater for much of anything. So my top five is going to be more like a top 3 because that is about the best I can do.
So my picks are not comic movies and I will not pick comic movies to be in my top five unless its nothing else to choose. The reason is because unless the movie is something out of this world fantastic, it is very cliche for a geek(like myself) to choose a comic book based movie as my favorite, especially if its a character that is one of my favorites like Captain America(Who in the world is not a Captain America Fan… Duh lol..not taking shots at anyone). 300 Rise of an Empire did leave out much more for the fans to want but I thought it was pretty good other than that the female villain was the beast and the supposed leader Xerxes was a straight Biotch in this movie. Otherwise it was entertaining. Enemies Closer was actually pretty good and Jean-Claude Van Damme was a freaking lunatic in the movie and personally I feel that old Van Damme may have finally found his niche. He was a pretty good villain in Expendables 2 where his role was good opposed to all the other corny one-liners of everyone else ugh. And in Enemies Closer he was believable as a bad guy. The Lego Movie was entertaining for the kids but it has some pretty funny parts in it that adults will enjoy and the story line is great(Crazy Glue LOL classic).
Short sweet and to the point,… Peace
