No Transformers, So Here’s a List!

Grab your seats, class is in session.

The Professor is a little annoyed because he was going to go see Transformers 3 today and bring you a review, but while out running a few errands his blood pressure got pretty high. Morons abound today and were bad enough for me to say “Screw it, I’m just going home.”

So to make up for what I should be posting about, I decided to give you all a little insight into my head. Below you’ll find a list of my top ten favorite movies with a brief explanation as to why. I’m not going to get into the actual movie explanation, for sake of time. Google, people. Learn to love it.

Now, keep in mind, while I do have an absolute favorite, the other 9 are really in no particular order. I actually tried to put them in a 1-10 order and just couldn’t pick some over others. Hopefully I can open you all up to some stuff you’ve never seen and you can gain a little better idea of why I like what I like and why I hate what I hate. Here goes:

Caddyshack – Does this really need to be explained? Quite possibly the greatest comedy of all time, only to be followed by quite possibly the worst sequel ever made. Near as I’m concerned, Caddyshack 2 doesn’t really exist, like Highlander 2. Be the ball, kids. Be the ball.

Good Will Hunting – This is one that holds a special place for me. I never really talk about why much. Some people know, one person in particular. That aside, this is just a good movie. The first real showing for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. While I realize some people don’t like either of them, I particularly find them both to be excellent actors and combined with Robin Williams made a fantastic movie.

Usual Suspects – Again, another that really doesn’t need explaining. A tremendous cast that puts together one of the best “twist ending” movies ever. You could have given me an entire movie of Kevin Spacey and Chazz Palminteri arguing back and forth and I would still find this one of the best movies ever. I don’t care what anyone says, if you say you saw it coming, you’re full of it.

The Prestige – I was never really a big Hugh Jackman fan, but this movie turned me around. This to me showed that he really can act and act well. Along with Christian Bale, Scarlet Johanssen, and Michael Cain, you get another phenomenal “twist ending” movie that never loses steam and honestly keeps you guessing. Cameos from David Bowie and Andy Serkis don’t hurt either.

American History X – Two words: Edward Norton. Could be my favorite actor. Don’t know that I’ve watched him in anything I didn’t like. I remember when I first saw this movie, I couldn’t decide if I liked it or not because it really made me think hard about racism around me and racism in myself. It’s a tough, tough movie to watch but if you can get through it, it’s just awesome. I would honestly show this in schools if I didn’t know people would freak out over it.

Clerks – The first movie of one of my idols, Kevin Smith. Weirdly, the first Smith movie I ever saw was actually Dogma, which I also loved, but it’s not the same as Clerks. If you are a dialogue fan, and love movies that sound like conversations you have with your own friends, you must see this movie. It was made for like $25k, so don’t look for much in the way of acting or film quality, but just go with the dialogue. It’s worth it.

Dead Poets Society – It’s hard to say much about this movie because it’s one of those you need to see to appreciate. It’s not one I can relate to as I personally have never gone through anything that happens in the movie, but it’s so well acted, and such a great story. It’s incredible how much it draws you in to multiple characters and makes you care about them in such a short amount of time. Another Robin Williams role that was more dramatic that funny, yet his performance is just amazing. I think everyone needs a teacher like his character.

Meet Joe Black – This one is a little weird for me to include on this list. It’s essentially a remake of “Death Takes a Holiday.” This really is more of a “chick flick” type movie, but man it’s so good. Hard not to be when your two main characters are Anthony Hopkins and a young Brad Pitt. Again, I realize a lot of people don’t like Pitt and don’t think he’s all that good an actor, but I offer you this movie to change that opinion.

Se7en – Yeah, I used the 7 like the movie posters cause I always thought that was cool. I love this movie. So badass. Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey…and even R. Lee Ermey (HOO-RAH!). Horror/thriller/mystery type movie. This is another one where if you tell me you saw the ending coming, I will call you a liar to your face. NO ONE saw this ending coming.

So, there’s the nine others, in no particular order. For number 10, and my favorite movie, I give you:

Chasing Amy – Another one that’s hard for me to explain why I love it so much, but I could sit and watch this movie 3, 4, 5 times in a row and not get tired of it. This is my favorite Kevin Smith movie and my favorite all over movie. This is my favorite Smith dialogue from all of his movies. I could sit and listen to the 3 major speeches over and over. They really hit home with me. While the story is something that will never, ever happen to me, it’s the meaning of it all that understand and appreciate. If there is ever a movie I tell anyone and everyone to watch, it’s this one. Even if I don’t think you’ll like it, I’ll tell you to watch it.

So that’s that, kids. That’s my top ten list. Hopefully you find something new to check out. If you do, let me know what you think. Love it or hate it, either way is fine. I’ll just be ready to tell you if you’re wrong.

That’s all for now.

Class dismissed.
