Geek News of the Day – 4.17.15

What’s up everybody, the Professor checking in to drop some knowledge and give you the GNOD. No voiceover work today, I’m feeling a bit lazy. Let us know if you prefer that format though, and we’ll see what we can do. There isn’t a ton of big news today, most of the heavy stuff came yesterday, but we have a few things for you today.

AMC casts its Preacher

Back in 1990, Vertigo Comics created a new comic that quickly gained a decent fan base called Preacher. Preacher is a series about a small town Texas preacher named Jesse Custer who gets accidentally possessed by an omnipotent creature named Genesis. Genesis is a being whose power rivals that of God, and because of that, God abandons heaven and takes to walking the Earth. With new found abilities to control people who hear and understand his words, Custer begins a quest to find God. While I personally have never read the comic, it sounds like a dark, graphic story line and definitely has my interest. Who do we have playing the Preacher? Howard Stark himself, Dominic Cooper has been cast in the lead role. I’m a fan of Cooper’s and can’t wait to check this out.

Why MacLaren left Wonder Woman

It’s never a good sign for a movie when the initially cast director leaves siting the dreaded “creative differences” problem. You hope something like this can be recovered from, but more often than not, it just gets worse. There is word now that the creative differences was a bit more than just minor differences. MacLaren wanted to create an epic origin story, one she called “in the vein of Braveheart.” DC, however, told her they wanted a more character-driven, less action filled movie. LESS action filled? Why would you want a superhero movie with LESS action? If what’s being said is true, I would greatly worry about the direction DC Studios is making their directors take.

Crossbones to be major player in Civil War

When last we saw Frank Grillo, he was burned to a crisp and barely alive at the end of Captain America 2 – The Winter Soldier. It’s no secret that Grillo eventually becomes the mercenary Crossbones in the comics, and it is clear now that this is the direction he will be taking in the movies as well. What we are hearing now is that his character will be a major player in Captain America 3 – Civil War. Such a big character, in fact, that he will be the actual spark that begins Civil War itself. In the comics, the spark was caused by an incident involving a young group of superheros called The New Warriors and a massive explosion caused by the villain Nitro. Personally, I think this makes a whole lot more sense. Adding the Warriors to make this work would be awkward as they are pretty much a “B List” group of heroes and they would really have to be shoehorned in at this point to even come close to having it make sense. Using Crossbones as the lynch pin to the war should flow really smooth. I can’t wait to see it.

Terminator: Genisys – Victim of too much in a trailer

This last bit for today was something that actually came out a few days ago, but has bothered me enough that I felt the need to bring it back. A new trailer was released for Terminator: Genisys a few days ago that has pretty much revealed the biggest twist in the entire movie. I won’t reveal the twist, so if you want to see it click the link below to the trailer, but I do need to say a few things about it. The first trailer they had for this movie was actually very good. It did exactly enough to garner interest in the movie and actually make some people interested in seeing it. Why on Earth would you then release only the second trailer and completely give away the big reveal? This makes zero sense to me. If anything, this will probably kill some of the buzz around the movie as now we know what’s going to happen. The first trailer? Would never have even come close to guessing the twist from it. The second trailer? Tells pretty much the entire movie. I honestly hope it still works out as the movie looked extremely interesting to me, but now? Now it’s lost a little of its luster as there are no big surprises left.
