Geek News of the Day 3/26/2015
Hey, folks. Today we’re bringing you the fresh GNOD as soon as it comes to us. Few things coming down the pipeline today, so let’s take a look.
Sony Grabs up Robotech Rights
Looks like Sony pictures has scooped up the rights to this anime classic, and are looking to build a franchise from it, according to Variety. Robotech, for those that don’t know, is an anime series that debuted in the U.S. in the 1980s and is story dealing humanity’s use of robot technology to defend itself from an alien invasion. Think “Independence Day meets Star Wars”.
“‘Robotech’ is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life,” said De Luca [Production Cheif of Sony Pictures]. “That’s why we are so excited to be working with Gianni [Nunnari] and Mark [Canton] [(“300,” “The Immortals”) producing] as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, ‘Robotech’ offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.”
From its debut the 1980s, Robotech has spawned its own gaming and book franchises as well.
“I’m thrilled to be back in business with Sony Pictures and Gianni and I look forward to working with the studio on this global franchise-driven opportunity,” said Canton, who ran the studio in the 1990s. “‘Robotech’ is a very significant and legendary part of the growth of anime into the force that it is today, and we’re excited to be adapting it for modern audiences.”
The rights to the franchise were originally in the wheelhouse of Warner Brothers with Tobey Macquire and Akiva Goldsman linked to produced. It was gathering interest from such names as Leonardo Dicaprio before time ran up at WB. When it opened back up, Sony jumped at the chance to take these movie rights.
“When the rights to ‘Robotech’ became available we jumped; Mark and I knew it had what big movies in today’s world must have if they want to grab everyone: insane visuals and powerful themes,” said Nunnari. “The characters in ‘Robotech’ wrestle with both the destructive and redemptive powers of technology; nothing is more relevant today than that.”
More news as this story unfolds, but this looks like it’s going to be one heck of a thrill ride if done right. We always look forward to our childhood making a comeback in this day and age.
Jubilee in X-Men: Apocalypse
Looks like Bryan Singer himself has taken to Instagram to release the latest bit of casting news for X-Men: Apocalypse. Lana Condor will be joining the cast as Jubilation Lee A.K.A. “Jubilee”. Looks like this cast is shaping to be a solid one, and with Singer back at the helm it’s poised to be a great film. Condor is joining fellow new comers Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler. Oscar Isaac will co-star as Apocalypse himself.
Marvel and Mckay.
Looks like Marvel Studios is looking to pick up Adam Mckay to direct a future Marvel project, according to sources as Latino-Review. Your guess is as good as ours, but over at LR they’re pointing towards Mckay picking up The Inhumans. As we get more details, we’ll update you.
