Jem & The Holograms
Something for the Classic Geeks
So let’s start with a goodie for the classic geeks, the 80s geek. Along with He-man, G.I. Joe and the like there was another key classic toon on television that garnered some popularity. Jem and the Holograms. I’m not too familiar with the show (I knew it was on, but I was watching the Transformers and the Turtles, but mainly the Turtles… always the Turtles), but Wikipedia gives a nice little description to the story:
The series revolves around Jem, the mysterious lead singer of the rock group “Jem and the Holograms”. Her real name is Jerrica Benton, and under this name she is the owner and manager of Starlight Music. Jerrica adopts this persona with the help of a holographic computer, known as Synergy, which was built by Jerrica’s father to be “the ultimate audio-visual entertainment synthesizer” and is bequeathed to her after his death. Jerrica is able to command Synergy to project “the Jem hologram” over herself by means of the remote micro-projectors in her earrings, thus disguising her features and clothing enabling her to assume the Jem persona. While disguised as Jem, Jerrica is able to move freely without restrictions and on several occasions other people have been in direct physical contact with her without disrupting the holographic projection. Jem, through the use of her earrings, is also able to project holograms around her and uses this ability throughout the series to avoid danger and provide special effects for the performances of her group.
The film is set to star Aubrey Peeples as the star and is due out on October 23, 2015. When interviewed by USA Today, director, John M. Chu (Director of the G.I. Joe cinematic series) said the following about the modern day take on the coming of age tale,
“It’s actually about a group of young people who are going to be inundated with this idea of fame and fortune and products and stuff, and within all that, how do you stay true to who you really are?” Chu says. “That’s the real soul of the movie.”
One thing that I find interesting about this film is the director’s comments on secret identities (which the film will explore). In the age of superhero films, the idea has a different meaning here. There’s more of a focus on the image that we put out to the public via social media. This identity compared to the person that we truly are has a way of providing an interesting foil to the characters in the film,
“How can you even have a secret identity with all this social media? But then it dawned on us: Wait, everybody has a secret identity. The idea of ‘Who are you really?’ is more relevant today than ever….That’s what inspired me to say, ‘Let’s roll the dice and try to make this movie.’ “

Since the films announcement, there really hasn’t been much media released on the films look or nature, but we have a few new pics for this one followed by the trailer. Take a look.

Marvel Movie News
Ava DuVarney To Possibly Direct A Marvel Film?
Some Oscar worthy talent is being scouted by Marvel Studios for an upcoming film. According to an article on The Wrap, Director Ava DuVarney has been approached by Marvel to direct one of their upcoming films. No details on which film has been released as of yet, but my guess is that she’s being asked to helm Captain Marvel or Black Panther. Both movies are the next on the release schedule that have yet to receive a director. Further down the line is the Inhumans, but I doubt they are looking for directors for that film at this moment.
It would be great to see her helm one of these projects. I loved the shots that she created in Selma. Some really intense scenes grip you in that film and she would crush either one of these films given the opportunity. I’m sure we’ll be finding out which film she’ll be taking on very shortly. More news as this story progresses.
Captain America: Civil War Set Photos
Looks like we have a few set shots from the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. The filming on the project has already started in Atlanta, GA, but the way the shots are set up it looks like they are setting up a scene in London. There’s also a possibility they are setting up a Wakandan scene as well (Village shot). Take a look at the photos below.

The Winter Soldier On The Set
Looks like we have a pic from Sebastian Stan on the set of Civil War as well. The cast of the new movie is shaping up to be one for the ages. Stan will also be starring alongside Paul Bettany (returning as The Vision), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Rudd (Ant-man), Daniel Bruhl (Baron Zemo), Frank Grillo (Crossbones), Chadwick Bosman (Black Panther), Emily VanCamp (Agent 13), and, of course, the vets Robert Downey Jr. (Ironman), Chris Evans (Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye). Martin Freeman has been cast as well, although the details of his role have not been disclosed. I’m going out on a limb and guessing Everett K. Ross (A key character in Black Panther).

The marketing run of the upcoming Deadpool movie has been nothing less than stellar. Each little nugget the Merc with a Mouth leaves us makes us eager to see what the movie is going to hold. Let’s take a look at some to the ads for Deadpool that we’ve received over the past few days.

Shondaland’s Newest Attraction
I’m a big fan of Shonda Rhimes and the dramatic works she’s been creating with Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. She’s been making thrilling dramatic stories that keep fans guessing what’s going to happen next. Looks like she’s adding another show to the mix. The Catch is coming soon. Check out the trailer to see what to expect.

D.C.’s Lucifer
DC/Vertigo is taking another one of it’s lesser known properties to TV. This one is called, Lucifer and the story goes like this: “the series will focus on Lucifer, ‘who is bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell and resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the beauty of Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals.'”
Check out the trailer below.
Lupita Nyong’o’s Star War Character Has Been Revealed!
Looks like we’re closer to understanding the look of Nyong’o’s character in Star Wars. Looks like she’ll be a CG character, and now we have a sample of what the character through some concept art. Take a look and leave your thoughts!
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Trailer
The newest gameplay trailer for Ubisoft’s Assassin Creed Syndicate has been released, and it is incredible! This go around you’ll be following the Frye’s (Jacob and Evie) as they assume gang populated Victorian London. A new feature in the game is that of the grappling hook that adds an extra dimension of environmental interaction to the gameplay. Check out the trailer for yourself. This should be fun.
New Terminator Character Posters
As we get closer to the release of Terminator Genisys more marketing will be making it’s rounds and the character posters have been released. I’m excited for this film as a fan of the franchise, but I think they introduced a huge spoiler in the trailer revealing the twist in the form of the main antagonist of the film, but I’m trusting that the filmmakers know what they’re doing. Either that or we’re in for a failure of a film (and that would be a shame considering the cast).
Suicide Squad News
Seriously, I’m excited for this film! It has a lot to do with the fact that David Ayers is directing. His style of directing gives a very intimate character study for the actors in the cast that brings out very authentic performances from them. I’ll be interested to see what this caliber of director brings to this story. Recently Ayers released his thoughts on the film:
“I’m all about real drama, real performance, and real people, so my twist on this is I’m creating a family. I’m creating a brotherhood here. I’m creating a very real chemistry and I have this incredible ensemble of actors led by Will Smith, who are basically playing dimensional characters with lives and souls.”
That’s a statement I could get behind. I would even dare to say this my be the best performance driven comic book film in the DC Cinematic Universe. Take a look at the latest set photos from the movie and the cast photo.
That’s all I got for the geek news of the day today folks. We’ll try not to leave you alone for so long next time! Let us know what you think in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.
