Geek News of the Day 04.22.15
Hey, Folks! Big Boss here to give you a look at today’s Geek News of the Day. There are a few items on the list to go through as the movie news comes our way. Some things may prove interesting, other things may not. Even still, others you may have already had an inkling to. Either way, we want to here your thoughts! So, lets jump right into the GNOD and see what you have to say.
Simon Pegg Confirms Idris Elba Casting in Star Trek 3
In recent interview with MTV News, Pegg answered questions regarding Idris Elba’s involvement in the new film. What I was hearing, was that Elba was going to be playing a Klingon villain for the next film. Here’s what Pegg had to say:
“It will be [an original character], yes. This is the five-year mission now, we’re out there. We don’t always have to keep bumping into the same people… So we’re gonna try and reflect that in the movie.”
A lot of fans were disappointed with the last Star Trek noting that it was too similar to Wrath of Khan. I, on the other, hand enjoyed it and can’t wait for the next one. There are times when the filmmakers of a franchise can take note of the pulse of fan reception and alter course appropriately. Pegg continues to note:
“We can invest in it the spirit of the show and get back to the essence of what we’re hoping to do is make a Star Trek for today that doesn’t forget where it came from.”

Light The Candles! Lumiere Has Been Cast
Good news for you my fellow Disney geeks! Looks like Beauty and Beast has found it’s Lumiere. For those that remember, Lumiere was the lively candelabra that led the most memorable song of the film “Be our Guest”. The hopeless romantic will be played by none other than, Ewan McGregor. He joins an already incredible cast. This movie is shaping up to be loaded with talent. Check the gallery below to see McGregor and cast-mates.
Batman V. Superman Is Not a “Man Of Steel” sequel
The Man of Steel himself, Henry Cavil, has taken to answer a question that most were pondering with Batman v. Superman. Is this Man of Steel 2? In a recent interview with MTV News he goes on, in detail, on what Batman v. Superman is really setting up to be and how this is not a sequel to Man of Steel:
“I wouldn’t call this a ‘Superman sequel.’ This is ‘Batman vs Superman,’ so it’s a separate entity altogether. It’s introducing the Batman character, and expanding upon the universe which was kicked off by ‘Man of Steel.’ So yeah, watch the space. See how it turns out. Again, everything can change in the editing room. But, as it stands, it’s definitely an introduction of the character [Batman] and, ultimately, the introduction of ‘Justice League.'”
He doesn’t actually go on to say that there will definitely be a Man of Steel 2, but I’m sure the plan is very similar to Marvel’s in the fact that they’ll be setting the group movie then following with separate stories for the characters. Full interview below.
The Transformers Cinematic Universe
Hasbro’s First Quarter Earnings Call brought out some interesting news for you Transformer fans out there. Take a look:
“Our plan with the studio and filmmakers, you may have heard some writers being hired and we have in fact brought in Akiva Goldsman to lead a group of writers to really create a strategic plan around Transformers. We think there are any number of stories to be told from the brand that has been around for 30 years with amazing canon and mythology. We would expect the sequel to the Transformers movie [TF4] to happen in 2017.”
So, it’s looking a lot like a Cinematic Universe expansion is going to be taking with Optimus and his crew. It’ll be interesting to see how they develop these stories and what they decide to do with the franchise moving forward. What characters will they focus on? Will we be seeing what life was like in Cybertron the moments before the “Great War”? I guess we’ll just have to wait. apparently until 2017.
A Fantastic Gallery
Fox has released a series of photos from the fantastic 4 movie that is coming. Looks like most of them are coming from the latest trailer that was released. but it’s good to see some of these images up close. I know the way this movie is shaping up is really comforting The Professor (see photo of “Doom” or Domashev or whatever they’re calling him), but I’m hoping this movie surprises us. I’m a huge Josh Trank & Simon Kinberg fan so I’m anxious to see what this film has to offer. Check the photos out below.
That’s it for today folks. Check back tomorrow for some more of the GNOD!
