Deadpool: Dead On Point

Grab your seats, class is in session.

It’s been a while, but the Professor is back and holding class again. I’ve been ultra lazy and for that I apologize. Hopefully with the incoming barrage of things we have over the next few months, I won’t be away much. And after the week I just had, I need all the distractions I can get, so you should see more of me. What better way to get back in the saddle than with a review of the early front-runner for The Professor’s Choice for Best Movie of the Year:

Ok ok, I’m a little late. Deadpool came out almost a month ago, but in fairness, it’s been a rough couple weeks for the Professor, so I’m way behind. That, however, does not take way from giving this movie the props it deserves. Let’s get this out-of-the-way first and foremost: this movie is amazing. And I mean amazing. If you know anything about Deadpool and have read the comics, you’ll find this movie so bulls-eye perfect it’ll blow your mind. Outside of the voices in his head, I personally didn’t find a thing missing and from what I read, all of that credit goes to Ryan Reynolds. This movie has been his passion for a very long time and you can tell. Not only did they make sure to give you everything a Deadpool fan would want, he did not compromise anything he wanted to do to reach a wider audience. It would have been very easy to alter the character or the story to make it more “family friendly” and get it a PG-13 rating. The risk you run there is not only upsetting the comic fan base (which is a frothing at the mouth rabid crowd when it comes to characters like this) but you also lose some of your own credibility. For as long as most people following can remember, Reynolds has said he would only do Deadpool if it got the hard R-rating it deserved. He refused to go any other way. He got what he wanted, and damned if it doesn’t work perfectly. Deadpool is a homicidal psychopath who never shuts up, has a joke for every moment, is a perfect killing machine, and actually knows he’s in a comic book, or in this case, comic book movie. You HAVE to fill the movie with intense action. You HAVE to fill the movie with intense gore. You HAVE to fill the movie with sophomoric potty mouth humor. Without at least those three things, it would fall flat. Fortunately, we get all of this in spades.

Trying to get into detail about everything I loved or hated about this movie is almost impossible. Why? Because I loved everything and hated nothing. Well, almost nothing. Admittedly there were two things about this movie that I did not like. The first involves the main villain, Ajax. They fully explain that he has every nerve ending in his body destroyed and can no longer feel pain. What they do not explain is where he gets his super-strength from. As far as dislikes go, this one is chalked up to a personal annoyance cause I like to know everything. The only other thing I did not like? The movie ended. I could easily have sat through another 2 hours of this movie and not blinked an eye. Reynolds is perfect. There is no one else who could have done this half as well as he did. He quite literally is Wade Wilson. Morena Baccarin? Beautiful, and perfect. She flexed some comedic chops here that I didn’t even know she had. TJ Miller? Hilarious, as always, and the perfect partner for Reynolds’ Deadpool. The depiction of Colossus is spot on and the CGI used to create him is absolutely incredible. I have never heard of Negasonic Teenage Warhead before, so she was new to me here, but Brianna Hildebrand was great. An awesome job as the moody teenage almost Goth kid. Gina Carrano and Ed Skrein are fantastic as the movie villains. Even the gratuitous Stan Lee cameo is perfectly timed and hilarious.

So as I’m sure you can tell, I loved this movie. I went to the theater three times and I very, very rarely do that. Had I had more time, I would most likely have gone again. It is that much fun. If you had any interest and it’s still in theaters near you, go. Go before it gets taken out. You won’t regret it. Oh, but leave the kiddies at home. It’s rated R for a reason.

Until next time (which SHOULD be in about two weeks when Daredevil Season Two is out)…

Class dismissed.

The Professor

I'm a firm believer in the philosophy of a ruling class, especially since I rule.
