Deadpool

… And We’re Back!

Hey folks, after a long hiatus the Big Boss is back, and not a moment too soon. This year (what I like to call “the year of the geek”) is kicking off with Marvel/Fox’s latest effort, Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds. My face is still hurting from all the laughing I was doing during this one. This was a comic book adaptation done right.

This is the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.-Written by 20th Century Fox

You see what he did there?…

I was thoroughly satisfied with Deadpool. It’s execution was masterful. I would even dare to say as far as comic book adaptations go, this was the best by far. This film was successfully able to ignite my interest in it from the start. The ad campaign developed a hype for this film that was out of this world. Where most films would fail to deliver on this hype, Deadpool actually meets then continues to exceed expectations. It’s already earned a spot on my classics list as far as replay value is concerned.

Shout-out to the writing team on this one because they outdid themselves with this project. The dialogue between the characters and the ever so quintessential breaking of the fourth wall, were brilliant aspects of the film that didn’t overwhelm you as a viewer but still kept the movie in constant movement from start to finish. There wasn’t a joke that was used in the film that didn’t hit with the audience. Everyone in the theater laughed hysterically at every pun, gag, and exchange Deadpool had to offer. What I love is the creative input from the actors. A lot of the scenes showed a lot of improvisation by the cast which made the jokes land perfectly.

The Man Who Would Be Deadpool

deadpool-trailer-39-750x308To put it simply, Reynolds was born to play Deadpool. There’s nothing I can say that would prove that more than the work the guy has already done in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He’s put a lot of effort into getting this film circulated and enjoyed by audiences and fans alike. What makes me appreciate his work in this film the most is that everything he’s been doing for the past two years career-wise has been leading up to this, and you can see it in his work. He’s able to balance all aspects of Deadpool with little effort (i.e. the quick wit, the charm, deranged mind, and twisted humor).

This is NOT you’re kid’s Deadpool

The Deadpool your kids see on that Spiderman cartoon is NOT what you are getting here.

THIS is the Deadpool we were always meant to see!

This movie was solid as a rated R film. I don’t see why anyone would want to alter that fact for the sake of making it available to children. Deadpool on his own was always meant to be a rated R character. The idea that there were even murmurs of an attempt to bring this down to PG-13 is horrifying. Deadpool was always meant to be a hyper violent, hyper sexual, and comedic tale of madness & occasional heroics being fully aware of the comic book world it lives in. That’s part of what makes the material so great. It doesn’t take itself seriously at all and is unabashedly its own universe within a universe. So, the catch with that type is that when other characters visit that world they conform to the rules; and the inverse is also true so that when deadpool visits their world he confirms to their rules (to the best of his ability). This is why the Deadpool you see show up in an X-Men film my not be the same Deadpool you see in his own standalone film.

The Verdict

DP-Thumbs-d84b7Overall folks, this movie receives remarkably high scores from The Big Boss, and I advise all who can, to go take a look at this film and prepare to be entertained, it was worth every penny. It was expertly executed to entertain and gives MAXIMUM EFFORT! (you had to be there). So, if you’re looking for a great Valentine’s Day movie to go take your sweetie to go see Deadpool. He’s got the right moves to set the mood.
