Casual Friday Reviews – Kingsman: The Secret Service
Kingsman: The Secret Service
Good day to you! We’ve made to another Friday. The weekend is almost here, and undoubtedly some opportunities to watch some good film. I recently got a chance to check out Kingsman: The Secret Service and man I enjoyed myself.
The film stars, Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L. Jackson. In it, A spy organization recruits an unrefined, but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. Based on a comic book series, this spy action thriller plays with the idea of chivalry and knighthood in the modern age and really plays with themes of what it takes to be a real knight and hero in an age where there is so much chaos going on.
Initial Thoughts
I was already sold on the idea of seeing Colin Firth in an action film and Samuel L. Jackson back in the villain role. I thought it was something different for Firth it was going to be crazy to see him taking out enemies with the skill of an assassin. Samuel Jackson in the role of the villain has always been interesting. Jackson has had some interesting villain roles in his career and I was certain that his work in Kingsman would prove to be good. New comer, Taron Egerton, had some pretty cool moments in the trailer, so I was game to see what he brought to the table in Kingsman.
After the Film
I loved this film from start to finish talk about a thrill ride. It was reminiscent of the old school spy thrillers, but for the new age. Not as serious as Daniel Craig’s Bond but not as tongue in cheek as the Brosnan Bond films. What I liked the most was the action sequences in the film they had a dynamic way that they shot the scenes in a mix between first person and steady focus point made the action shots equally brutal and beautiful.
Colin Firth nails it as a secret agent. He has a regal poise as he glides through his action scenes. I’d love to see him in more action films, because he’s definitely capable of holding his own for the most part. Of course there are a few scenes where a double was need but he did an amazing job.
It’s always a joy to see Samuel Jackson on the screen. I love when he plays villain roles because he does those roles so well. This villain was interesting in the fact that there was a lot of truth in the evaluations he makes. His motivations are admirable, as always, it’s the way that he goes about fulfilling them.
New comer Taron Egerton definitely made an impact on his debut. I can see why his name is being tossed around as a possible name for Spiderman. His on track to be quite the decent action star.
There’s a lot of things that you can forgive with these kinds of movies. Things that go unnoticed for the most part. I didn’t quite like the fact that the female lead, Roxy (played by Sophie Cookson) was so underused in Kingsman. I would’ve loved to see her character more in the film. This movie left a lot of room for a sequel. In the same vein as the movie RED, so I’m sure we’ll see more of these characters in movies to come.
Overall, Kingsman: The Secret Service was a blast and was worth every penny to go see it. Strong cast with amazing action sequences, this movie was an edge of your seat thrill ride from start to finish. Grab your friends and go see this one right away you’ll have a good time definitely! Kingsman opens in theaters today.
