I almost forgot, “Before I go to Sleep”
It’s Casual Friday, yet again folks! You’re no doubt getting ready for the many costumed kiddies that will pound away at your door like crack fiends beseeching you for sugary sustenance, before absconding to the adjacent domicile only to repeat the process… or.. ahem… trick-or-treating. You may also be wondering what thrilling film you’ll be watching for the Halloween weekend. If you are, Before I go to Sleep, starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, & Mark Strong, may be right up your alley.
I haven’t seen Nicole Kidman in a film in a long time, not since the Golden Compass actually. That was 2007. She’s done so much since then, but I guess I just haven’t been interested in her work much. This movie, however, caught my eye. Kidman plays Christine, a woman who suffers a traumatic head injury that leaves her an amnesiac, forgetting the events of the whole day every night, and awaking only to believe she is in her early twenties. Obviously, this plot-line drew me in, because it sounds a lot like Memento (shout out to the Professor).
The interest I have in this movie has to do with the fact that Christine, as she moves from day-to-day, has to record what she’s learned so that she can remember it for the next day. As the story gets deeper, she begins to question the people in her life, at which point, it becomes a story about who can she actually trust.
The cast in this movie is so strong it’s hard to miss when doing a film like this with everyone giving such a strong performance. Overall, this a solid film worth giving a look over. To keep it honest with you, I’d still look for an early matinée showing to save some ducats on this one, being that it was a little slow to start. Once it picks up though, it really gets going.
